Lymphatic Treatments and Your Health

FAQ

Where will my MLD session take place?

Your lymphatic treatment session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. You will be covered by a comfortable sheet and blanket, and only the areas being worked on will be exposed.

What will MLD/Lymphatic massage feel like?

Lymphatic Drainage is best performed directly on the skin, as the lymph capillaries are directly beneath the skin.  Lotion would prevent the optimal manipulation of the lymph flow, however, if you have very dry or sensitive skin, I may moisturize before applying MLD techniques. MLD is extremely gentle and very relaxing.

How quickly after my surgery can I receive Lymphatic Treatments?

Depending upon the approval of your physician, you may start your Lymphatic Treatments as soon as the drains have been removed.  Often, we can start working within 5 to 7 days after surgery; if ok with physician, even earlier.

Can MLD soften scar tissue?

Yes, MLD helps reduce swelling, pain, and  bruising, and thus also can prevent excess scar tissue formation. MLD softens existing scar tissue; this applies even to older scars

Jin Shin Do acupressure

Jin Shin Do acupressure is very gentle style of acupressure, and does NOT require any disrobing, but please wear comfortable, loose clothing; i.e., Yoga pants and T-Shirt. Jin Shin Do acupressure utilizes the same energy points as acupuncture, however, only gentle pressure is applied.  It can be combined with MLD and applied directly or distal (away) from surgery sites or injuries.  Jin Shin Do can reduce pain, strengthen your constitution, and is very calming.

What should I do during the massage or bodywork session?

Prior to the lymphatic treatment, feel free to ask me any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the lymphatic massage, make yourself comfortable. I will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session, but feel free to talk about anything you like.

How will I feel after the MLD or bodywork session? After an initial period of feeling very relaxed, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Often, clients experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. Since toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage, it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.

What are the benefits of MLD/Lymphatic Treatment and other Integrative bodywork modalities?

MLD helps reduce swelling, pain, bruising, and softens scar tissue; this applies even to older scars. Massage and Integrative bodywork can help release acute and chronic muscular tension or pain, promote faster healing of injured tissue, improve circulation and joint flexibility, as well as reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress.  It also promotes better sleep, reduces anxiety, and creates an overall sense of well-being.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?

Yes, but few. Most of the time, even if you are not in optimal health, massage is not contraindicated. As a matter of fact there are very few absolute contraindications for the styles of massage I practice.

Nevertheless, before we begin your session, I will ask general health questions. It is very important that you inform me of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is advised that you talk to your physician about recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to your first session with me. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required.  We can certainly cover this subject before your first massage by phone or email. I can email you a detailed intake form to save both of us some time - or you can come in 10 minutes early to fill out the form.
